June is Men’s Health Month, and we consider it our duty to keep our fellas and their families up to date on the latest nutritional science research. The men’s health media has been all but taken over by the remarkable results of the Pomi-T study in recent months, but if you missed it, here’s a refresher: UK researchers uncovered that after taking a combination of four whole food extracts for six months, men experienced a 63.8% drop in protein-specific antigen (PSA), which is often overexpressed in men with prostate cancer.

In the past month, there have also been several studies documenting the power of specific nutrients for banishing health problems that tend to fall on men.


Ashwagandha Shown to Boost Testosterone Big Time

Recent research conducted on 46 men found that after just 90 days of supplementing with ashwagandha, testosterone levels in test subjects improved by an average of 17%. Published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, the study also noted a 167% increase in sperm count, a 53% improvement in semen volume, and a 57% boost in sperm motility among monitored subjects.

Ashwagandha is an ancient Ayurvedic herb that has been used for as long as 4,000 years to amplify the body’s ability to self-regulate at the cellular level.


Cocoa Polyphenols Found to Suppress Colorectal Cancer

Compared to other types of cancer, colorectal cancer has a high mortality rate because the gastrointestinal tract in the colon is particularly susceptible to overproducing free radicals, which stimulate cancer cell proliferation.

As a result, researchers in recent years have focused on the ability of antioxidant-rich nutrients like cocoa to prevent oxidative stress and help reverse or slow cancer development. Researchers pre-treated intestinal cells with flavanols and a cocoa phenolic extract for 20 hours and found that cocoa suppressed the production of reactive oxygen species in the gut. Cocoa has the highest flavanol content per weight of any known food and is now being touted as a potential nutrient therapy to help stop cancer cells from spreading.
Green & Black Tea Extracts Support Urinary Health

After supplementing with a 1,000mg blend of green and black tea extracts for 12 weeks, test subjects between the ages of 30 and 70 experienced a 34.5% average reduction in negative urologic symptoms. This study is the first to show that a combination of theaflavins and catechins may actually improve urinary flow rate, help moderate inflammation, and promote overall urinary tract health.
