Sweet Potato Soup with Ginger, Cinnamon, and Turmeric

This savory soup would make a lovely appetizer to a romantic Valentine’s Day dinner or a stand-alone lunch anytime.  Sweet potatoes are a significant source of vitamins A, C, B6, Betaine, fiber, potassium, and manganese.  The ginger, turmeric, and cinnamon top off the meal with bold flavors and detoxifying micronutrients.  For a creamy texture add some coconut milk – a great source of calcium.  Take a long slow inhale to really get your taste buds salivating over this rich concoction and enjoy!

Serves 4 to 6


  • 1 dash extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 small sweet onion, finely diced
  • Fresh grated ginger root, to taste
  • 2 lbs. sweet potatoes or yams, peeled and diced
  • Fresh water, enough to cover the potatoes
  • Sea salt, to taste
  • Cinnamon, to taste
  • Turmeric, to taste
  • Splash of coconut milk if desired


  1. Turn your slow cooker to high
  2. Drizzle olive oil in bottom of cooker
  3. Stir in onion and ginger once the oil is warm
  4. Add diced sweet potatoes
  5. Cover with water
  6. Add sea salt
  7. Cover and cook until potatoes are soft
  8. Remove potatoes and blend into a puree
  9. Add coconut milk or water if desired to thin the mixture
  10. Add cinnamon and turmeric to taste
